As part of my work for the Northern Regional College, I am teaching a two year horticulture course (CCEA Occupational Studies Level 1/2) to trainees at Greenlight Gateway in Ballycastle (http://www.greenlightgateway.com). Founded in 2007, Greenlight Gateway is a registered charity that provides support and training to young people with a learning disability, in the Causeway Coast area. They also provide supported employment opportunities via their Charity Shop, Clothes and Can Recycling activities and Garden Centre.
The horticulture course involves a mix of theory and practical, including sowing ornamental and vegetable seeds; pricking out and potting on; planting bulbs and bedding plants for seasonal gifts, outdoor containers and hanging baskets, and making more plants through cuttings and division. Our final class for this year was on 3rd June, when the weather was glorious and the heat inside the polytunnels was so great that we had to move the potting up of our peppers and tomatoes outside. A very happy summer holiday to all the trainees and I’ll see you in September.
